These images in clay are a visceral and considered approach to use of liquid clay, slip and granular sandy texture in the clay body. In combination with layers of translucent white cloud like porcelain the elemental imagery arises from the subtle palette, near black cobalt and ocean blues to the pale pinks and atmospheric greys.
The final expression of subtlety comes with the last high firing in the kiln when the true colour lucidity of the metal oxide based pigments develops at 1260 degrees centigrade and theĀ clays approach vitrification (nearing molten, fluxed).
The power of the process locks in an enduring magic to the image and its expansive dimensions. The liquid nature of the slip gives the flowing variation in line and when combined with the rough clay body, star-like pinholes open in the midnight blue.
Calm contemplative imagery lends an air of serenity to the space.
These pieces work as well in any room, and can be framed perfectly to suit the space; whether as long upright pictures or wide horizontal layouts.
